week 4 - final self reflection

Image
During this final week of senior projects, my group and I set out to finish trying to polish the cosmetic aspects of our second car. To do this we first did a final clean and then we attempted to install the rest of the headliner and fix the pieces that we had put in previously. This was not overly successful as we tried to incorporate two different fabrics into one to make the headliner appear a little more artistic than simply a single solid color like just about all cars but ran into some problem connecting the pieces. None the less we still believe it is an improvement over the old shredded and torn brown fabric that we had to tear the rest off of the roof. As for fixing the greatly sun damaged and chipped paint all over the car we decided to paint the entire car a yellow to help cover the old paint. This did prove slightly challenging though as the yellow we chose is quite light and the original color of blue is quite dark which means that in spots the blue still shines t...

week 3

A challenging moment from this week was when we realized that using bondo to repair larger dents and body issues could actually prove quite challenging. We figured this out when we came back after a day and see that we probably should've taken some more time when applying the bondo. This is because there ended up being a good number of larger ridges that we would now have to spend lots of time on sanding down since we didn't smooth out and layer it very well in our original application to the panel. So the challenging part about this is that now we have to sand this down to a single smooth surface to ensure it look good and that has been taking quite some time as the only powered sander we have is a single small hand held radial sander, that while a little better then just using a piece of sand paper, that is in no way perfect for the job. But since we can't remove it from the body we will now have to completely sand it smooth which will take awhile as we have already put a...

Week 2

This week there was one moment in particular that was both happy and also a bit challenging at the same time. This moment took place while we were getting our new car to work and was a pretty happy moment since we had been trying to find a car for a few days before we ran out of things to do with the van and this was one of the first times we were actually able to look at something worth while. after talking to the guy selling the car more, we figured out that it was pretty much perfect for our project as it ran and drove but also had some problems that we could fix which would be good things to learn and have some practice with. After taking it on a short test drive we decided that for our purposes it was great and so we decided to buy it. This moment was a happy one because after searching we finally had found something and knew would be a fun car to work with.  After buying the truck came a more  challenging of needing to get it back to Terin's house where we would be worki...

Week 1

The project that I have chosen to work on revolves around the maintenance and fixing of cars. More specifically I've chosen to focus on learning to repair and clean a car so that it runs more consistently without major problems that hinder its reliability as well as looking nicer. Basically, the idea behind this is to learn basic mechanic as well as cleaning skills so that an older rundown or even broken car can become something that a person would be ok driving in from both a mechanical and looks perspective. The first car that my group and I have begun to work on is a 2005 Honda Odyssey that had some problems with its battery, doors, trunk, and some body damage. I chose to do this particular project because I think that it will give me the opportunity to learn several skills that can be important in my adult life. There are several skills that I'll be able to learn in this project but the main ones include performing general maintenance, detailing and cleaning, and also possi...
